Garages are so much more than just a place to park a car. They’re versatile spaces you can utilize as a workshop, hobby room, man cave and so on. Of course, one of the main purposes these areas take on is storage. Before you go throwing just anything in your garage, there are certain items you should be mindful of when it comes to proper stowing. To help, here are a few do’s and don’ts of garage storage to get you started.
First, we’ll begin with a few do’s. Items that shouldn’t become damaged or otherwise pose a safety threat include automotive supplies, sports equipment, outdoor kids’ toys, seasonal decorations and yard tools. Basically, if it’s designed to be kept outside, it should be safe to store in the garage where temperatures fluctuate throughout the year. Another do is plastic storage containers. Great for all sorts of stuff, these bins can keep out the water and the pests, giving your belongings a safe place to stay.
Speaking of pests, there are numerous don’ts when it comes to the items pests may become interested in and ruin. For instance, storing pet food in the garage is a don’t as it attracts mice, cockroaches and all manners of little critters. When these vermin eat their fill, they may leave behind droppings further contaminating your pet’s food. Even canned pet food isn’t safe in the garage. When the elements change, canned food could spoil and may even explode creating a big mess. Instead, keep food in a temperate, dry storage space in the house.
It also helps to keep your garage space decluttered and organized. When storing belongings here, you don’t want to trip over them or be unable to find them when the time calls. That’s why it’s important to invest in the right storage solutions. Whether you opt for a bike rack, peg boards or wire shelving, there are many ways to maximize your space and make it more functional going forward.
